Partridge feathers are used extensively to tie artificial flies. They are generally wrapped around the eye of the hook (FIG. 1) or they can be tied without wrapping to imitate the wings or legs of the insect (FIG. 2). In any case, this is a material that should never be missing on your fly tying table.
Hotfly PARTRIDGE ENGLISH GREY - head and neck feathers come from Germany and are the result of hunting wild animals, legally killed by local hunters for their meat. For this reason they differ greatly from each other (FIG. 3), both in colour and in the quantity and size of the feathers.
There are many feathers on them that can be used to tie artificial flies. In most cases you will find both grey and brown feathers. It is also not uncommon to find feathers with a nuance between the two colours.
On each PARTRIDGE ENGLISH GREY - head and neck there are feathers of all sizes, from medium/large to very small. In FIG. 4 you can get an indicative idea of the size of the feathers according to the area from which they were taken. Next to each feather a Dry Nymph hook size #10 has been placed to better understand their proportions.
STRENGTH: The quality that distinguishes this product is undoubtedly its versatility. In fact, as already mentioned, the feathers are medium/large in size on the lower part of the neck and become smaller and smaller as you get closer to the head. This allows you to always have the right feather in relation to the size of the artificial fly you want to tie. In addition, you will find many small and medium-sized feathers, which are difficult to find elsewhere, allowing you to tie proportionate dressings even on very small hooks.
ATTENTION: As mentioned above, the partridge is not farmed and for this reason each head is different (FIG. 3). Most are as we have described, but you may also receive one with only grey feathers or only brown feathers. Or with more or fewer small feathers.
